The Cost of Coffee

I don't know how many hundreds of times I have had to hear this quote on NPR:

"A cup of coffee will cost you about two dollars and seventy cents. The same cup, if it was filled with oil, would cost you about fifteen cents."

It's some guy, I forget who, but I actually heard the program he was on, trying to explain how oil is actually "one of the cheapest liquids in the world".

OK, there are so many problems with this example - of course, nobody drinks 12 gallons of coffee, but that's how much gas you have to put in your car, so there's no comparison, and about twenty other things.

But my biggest pet peeve is that A CUP OF COFFEE DOES NOT COST $2.70! A "cup of coffee" costs $1.89 at pretty much every coffee place I've ever been to in the city of Boston. And that's a large. Whatever point he thinks he's making this is the part that stands out and makes me grind my teeth. I guess $1.89 didn't sound expensive enough for him to make his point. Just don't exaggerate random crap to suit you. The only coffee drink that's going to cost you close to $3 is something that couldn't be described as a "cup of coffee". A latte or a frappucino or some kind of espresso maybe. But not your basic cup of coffee.

WBUR, please, in the name of all that is decent, stop playing this clip before my head explodes.

Thanks for stopping by!

Buy Me Stuff

Really?

Thanks, very nice of you.

First, check my

Amazon.com wishlist

and there's no need to worry that I already have it or won't use it.

Tip: Check around for better pricing. Amazon's pricing is usually good, but not always the best available.

A quick Froogle search can't hurt.
