This might be one of the most annoying things I hear people say "wrong". I hear people say, "Sooner than later" all the time instead.
The phrase is "sooner rather than later" as in "it would be better if you took care of this sooner (ie: earlier, as quickly as possible, pretty soon, today) RATHER THAN later (ie: instead of later, rather than waiting, etc.)"
If you change it to "sooner than later" it makes no sense.
If I said, "I'd prefer tea rather than coffee" I couldn't take out "rather" and still have the sentence sound like I know how to speak English, right? "I'd prefer tea than coffee" makes no sense.
Please people, use the entire phrase. It makes my ears bleed when you say it wrong.

Oh God, it makes me nuts. The "needs washed" thing might be in both OH and PA to tell you the truth. And in Pittsburgh I think it's "needs worshed". Also.

I don't mind it if the preface it with the rather, ie: "I'd rather have it sooner than later" but just saying "sooner than later" is dumb.
Oh yeah Melissa wrote at 2006-09-07 16:33:
also, something that I totally do not understand..."So don't I." What does that mean? I like coffee...So don't I. What? Either you do or you don't, which is it? Don't agree with me by saying you don't too...crazy New Englanders!!

Oh, that's another of my pet peeves. Notice I have a pet peeves category. Notice I have a lot of posts in it. Yeah. "So don't I" and what about "I could care less" versus "I couldn't care less" - both used the same way! What? I don't use either because I hate it so much. And don't even get me started on people saying "irregardless" and using "" not to quote to but to emphasize as in a store with a sign advertising "fresh" eggs. Huh?

I love the false quotes. That's all about my Aunt Donna! And I think I do say "sooner than later," but I say it in the same way Melissa does. Is that still unasseptable?
Jenn wrote at 2006-09-08 12:42:
No, it's totally OK to say it if you add the rather beforehand. The important part is just that you use the word RATHER because otherwise the phrase is nonsense!
