Pretty girl

This is one of my favorite photos I've ever managed to take of a cat of ours, so I thought I'd post it here. Katie looking all grown up and regal! This is actually from about a year ago, hard to believe she's getting close to being 2 years old now. She's still very kitten like in her propensity for play... much to poor Molly's chagrin.

Some photos from Baxter State Park last summer

I wanted to put up a Colorbox gallery of photos following Rob's tutorial on how to do so, so I picked a few favorites from our backpacking trip in Baxter State Park in Maine last summer. Click on the photo below for the mini gallery (now with titles!).

I highly recommend Baxter, it's big and very undeveloped and beautiful.

Sad pigeon story

This isn't really a "pet" but I guess my category should more rightly be "animals". That's another issue.

Anyway, here is a sad little story from RJ (aka the Bear) about a pigeon he tried to save in NYC.

It actually has me a little teary. If you know me that's probably not surprising. There are a million animals with a story this sad or sadder but seeing her there with her little deformed leg and hearing the Bear's story about giving her a bath and blowdrying her just touches my cold dead heart a little bit extra.

Sorry the pigeon was euthanized, Bear.

Coming 'Round to Get You

Thanks to Pandora I have found a number of new songs and artists I am trying out. (By the way, I fully realize they are not necessarily new to you, or the world at large... I am not on the cutting edge of the music scene. They are just new to me.) I'm going to try to post about them here regularly.

Here's what I just listened to, by Farewell Milwaukee (link goes directly the mp3 download at Amazon).

can’t you feel all the dirt from their money
the leather from their briefcase
the chill from their cold cold heart

Also, the band has uploaded the song to YouTube which I love. I like when bands share things for free. It encourages people to listen and decide to buy their music. It doesn't lose money for them. Bands that get this make me happy. Here it is on YouTube:

Here's something that bothers me

Do you know that <strike>professional</strike> official NFL cheerleaders don't get paid a dime? They can make money through promotional stuff, like selling calendars or whatever, but they get no salary. So everyone who is a cheerleader for a professional NFL team has to have a real job too, or be independently wealthy or married to someone who supports them.

Of course, the football players make millions of dollars, but apparently there's no money to go around for the cheerleaders.

Ladies, have some pride, and quit. Of course, if all the current cheerleaders quit, new ones would just step in.

Way to go, ladies. Way to undervalue yourselves and what you do so much. A real step forward for the gender. I appreciate it so much.

Fail.

I just said, "It's the future, man," and Rob said, "It is the future. We just can't afford it."

We were talking about how the world's fastest plane can fly 20x the speed of sound which is the equivalent of going from the east coast to the west coast of the U.S. in 10 minutes.

Crazy!
